What is BOTOX®?
BOTOX® is an FDA-approved cosmetic formulation of a neurotoxin that interrupts nerve signals from the brain that instruct muscles to move. The FDA first approved Botox® for treating debilitating muscle spasms of the eyelids, bladder spasms, excessive sweating, and other medical conditions.
In the late 1990s, an ophthalmologist realized patients receiving treatment for eye spasms were also losing their frown lines. She published her findings in an acclaimed medical journal and the use of BOTOX® to counter the effects of aging began.
How does BOTOX® help with facial wrinkles?
Muscles underneath your facial skin are responsible for wrinkling your forehead when you frown, crinkling the corners of your eyes when you squint, and lifting your eyebrows when you’re surprised. These movements create wrinkles in your skin that can become permanent over time. Injecting BOTOX® into specific areas of your face causes the muscles to relax and ignore nerve impulses from the brain. When those muscles relax, the overlying skin also relaxes, which lessens the appearance of wrinkles.
What are the treatments like?
BOTOX® is administered through injections using very small needles. There may be slight stinging with the injection, but most patients report minimal to zerodiscomfort. Some individuals experience mild swelling, and rarely bruising, at the injection sites that resolve quickly. There is very little recovery time associated with BOTOX® treatments, and you can expect to return to work or normal activities the same day.
How long will it last?
It takes about seven days to notice the full effects of a BOTOX® injection and results last from three to six months. To maintain the effects in reducing the appearance of wrinkles and smoothing fine lines, patients should expect to repeat BOTOX® treatments every three to six months.
Is it safe?
When administered by a qualified professional, BOTOX® is considered safe and effective for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in men and women. It pays, however, to enlist the services of a Dermatologist such as Dr. Hill, since less skilled clinicians can misjudge the appropriate placement or amount of formula needed per injection. This may leave you with a very unnatural, mask-like appearance until the effects wear off. Dr. Hill and her team have the skill to leave you looking naturally young and vibrant rather than plastic.
